Parents FAQ
Some of the questions that parents frequently ask about Gateway Preparatory Academy:
Q. What is Gateway Preparatory Academy?
A. Gateway Preparatory Academy, or GPA for short, is a Kindergarten through Eighth grade non-profit Charter School.
Q. What is a Charter School?
Charter Schools are public schools that have their own school board responsible to the parents of their students and to the State Board of Education. Charter Schools usually have a special educational focus that sets them apart from School District Public Schools.
Q. What is GPA’s special educational focus?
A. GPA is focusing on increased individual attention to improve student learning, as well as allowing students to progress at their own pace.
Q. What else is special to GPA?
A. Our mission statement includes a focus on teaching the tools of learning, especially reading, writing and mathematics. These tools allow students to learn more on their own. We also focus on providing a safe, respectful, disciplined, and supportive learning environment.
Q. How are Charter Schools funded?
A. Just like other public schools, Charter Schools are funded with tax money, grants and private donations. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, donations to GPA are tax-deductible.
Q. Do Charter Schools take away money from Public Schools?
A. Charter schools are public schools and therefore can’t take away money from public schools in general. Generally Charter Schools leave more money per student served in local School District Budgets.
Q. Will I have to pay tuition for my child to attend Gateway?
A. No. As a public school, no tuition is charged. All forms of parental involvement are strongly encouraged, including donations of time and money.
Q. What is required of a parent of a child enrolled in GPA?
A. Charter schools rely heavily on parental involvement. We expect parents to be willing to donate their time to help make their children’s education better. GPA has volunteer opportunities available to fit anyone’s skills and interests. Volunteer opportunities include things like helping to monitor recess, reading to children, helping with lunches, assisting with fundraising, etc…
Q. Does GPA have a dress code, like some other Charter Schools do?
A. Yes. GPA’s dress code for students is business casual. We do not require any specific colors of clothing.
Q. Will GPA be in a regular school building?
A. We have under construction a brand new school facility specifically designed for GPA and the needs of our students. The Academy will be located convenient to the north freeway interchange.
Q. How do I register my child as a student at GPA?
A. You must fill out an online enrollment application and submit it to be considered at GPA’s next open enrollment period. There will be multiple open enrollment periods before the Academy opens. GPA is accepting 75 students per grade level on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are more applications than openings during a particular open enrollment period, then preference will be given first to Academy founder’s children, then to siblings of children already enrolled in the Academy. Upper-grade students will be enrolled before lower-grade students. A random lottery will be held to determine who will fill any openings for which there are more applications than space available in the class.
Q. When does the GPA school year start?
A. GPA’s 2008 school year will start August 18th. GPA’s school calendar is more year-round than you may be used to, which gives students longer breaks during the school year and allows them less time to forget knowledge during the summer months.
Viewing Student Academic Records
Student academic records are available online to parents and will be updated by school staff on a regular basis.
Parents can access their student's records using GPA's web site:
- If you are registered on the web site (http://GPACharter.org) and you are able to view the enrollment application status of your students, then you are already setup to view their student records. For logged in users there is a new menu item in the left menu titled "Student Records".
- If you aren't registered on the web site, you will need to register at http://GPACharter.org/user/register . If you register with the same email address that is already listed in a student's enrollment application then their student record should automatically be linked to your user account within a couple of hours.
- If you have registered in the past, but forgotten your web site username and/or password you may go to http://GPACharter.org/user/password to request a new password be emailed to you. You will need to supply either the email address or the username your user account is under.
- If you have registered a user account that isn't linked to your student's enrollment or student records, please email GPAInfo@gpacharter.org and provide your username and the student's names that you need linked to that username. Student records may only be linked to one parent user account at a time.
The student records page includes links to the individual student record as well as a link to their mentor's class information and email address.
Individual student records include a "Presented Competencies" section that lists core curriculum items (competencies) that have been presented, or taught, to the student and that the student is currently working on mastering.
There is also a "Past Academics" section in the record that lists competencies that the student has already mastered. To view the "Past Academics" section you must click on the section name to expand it.
You may browse competencies in the context of the whole curriculum by clicking on the curriculum link at the top of the page. For most competencies, just basic information is currently included. Over time more curriculum details will be available. Some of the elective teachers will have alternate methods of communicating what their students are working on.
What After School and Off-Track Options do you want?
We're trying to determine what the after school and off track program needs to look like to serve the students and parents. There are a variety of possible routes, ranging from a small free program for a few kids that need it the most to a large parent-paid program through third-party providers, including dance/music/karate/academic/etc... professionals.
Please vote even if you don't plan to participate in activities, since we need to get an idea of what percentage of the students will be planning to participate or not.
There are several legal and financial issues that we'll have to overcome in order to create a successful program. Those issues limit our options in what we can offer. The results of the poll will guide the Academy Board in deciding how to structure the program within our legal options to best meet everyone's needs.
Please select all of the options that apply to the students in your family.
Thank you for helping to make GPA the school our kids deserve.

Teacher and Staff Qualifications
Gateway Preparatory Academy anticipates serving students with a wide range of needs and abilities. Academy teachers will be trained to identify specific needs, gifted students, and problem areas for students. To support the Academy's commitment to reading, writing, and second language acquisition, the Academy will require teachers that are dedicated to increased time on developing these skills.
